Elderberry's benefits range from aiding in the reduction of stress, inflammation, influenza symptoms and LDL cholesterol levels to supporting the immune system.

Over centuries, herbalists discerned the strengths and medicinal uses of each part of the Elderberry plant. Used both topically and internally, Elderberry soothes numerous ailments including burns, infections, colds and flu and painful inflammation. Recently, Elderberry is most commonly known for its immune boosting powers during cold and flu season but it has a wealth of attributes that benefit a variety of health conditions.

Elderberry Contains Flavenoids and Rutin

Elderberry contains constituents known as flavenoids and rutin. Flavenoids act as an antioxidant and help the body to modulate its inflammatory response. It is also being researched as a promising aid in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. According to doctors at Austria’s University of Graz, Elderberry’s flavenoids, combined with other constituents that are still being studied, are suspected of preventing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol.

Rutin is helpful with blood circulation, vein health and also has anti-inflammatory properties. It is often isolated and added to eye health, varicose vein and hemorrhoid supplements. However, taking rutin from a whole food form, rather than an isolated form, may help to increase its bioavailability. Often, other constituents in foods help the absorption and metabolism of the whole food.

Elderberry for Immune System Building

Elderberry has long been used for its immune boosting benefits. One of the reasons for its effectiveness as an immune booster is its high antioxidant levels. It rivals vitamins C and E in antioxidant benefits as well as bilberry and other highly touted berries. Historically, Elderberry has been used in the treatment of influenza outbreaks and, according to Dr. Terry Willard, it has effectively treated eight strains of influenza. It has also been proven to shorten the duration of symptoms. It is so effective in fighting colds and viral infections that it is being researched as a possible adjunct in the treatment of HIV and herpes.

Elderberry for Stress

According to Dr. Sepp Porta, an Austrian endocrinologist, Elderberry is highly effective in reducing stress. Tests have revealed that this unassuming berry can help recovery after exercise and stress in general. It is so promising that it may be used in the military to help troops deal with high levels of stress.

Although Elderberry juice is the tastiest form, Elderberry extract, syrup and capsules are more readily available. Whether you choose to take it on an ongoing basis as an immune system booster or you wait until you feel symptoms, taking this highly versatile herb may help prevent some of those unwanted bugs this coming flu season.
