Holistic treatment for epilepsy in dogs may help reduce symptoms and lessen the need for conventional medication.

Epilepsy is a disease which results in seizures. The seizures are caused by neurons in the brain that become hyper-excitable, according to Shawn Messonnier, DVM, in his book, "Natural Health Bible for Dogs and Cats." Epilepsy in dogs is diagnosed by a veterinarian and may require prescribed medication. Holistic treatment can be used as a supplemental therapy to prescribed medication and should only be used under the supervision of a veterinarian.

Orthomolecular Therapy

Orthomolecular therapy is the use of high doses of vitamins and minerals to treat a disease. This therapy should only be used under the strict supervision of a qualified veterinarian since improper dosing of vitamins and minerals can be toxic. This therapy may help treat epilepsy by using high doses of vitamin A and selenium. Vitamin A doses range from 10,000 IU to 30,000 IU, depending on the dog’s size. Vitamin E is supplemented with vitamin A. Selenium is given in doses that range from 20 mcg to 60 mcg, depending on size. The treatment is followed until the dog no longer shows symptoms of epilepsy. Maintenance doses of the vitamins and minerals are given in gradually decreased doses.

Choline

Choline is helpful in treating neurological disorders by producing nerve chemicals that are necessary for healthy brain function. Lecithin, a supplement found in most health food stores, is commonly used to supplement choline since it contains phosphatidylcholine. It may cause digestive disturbance in some dogs. Cholodin, a pet supplement product, also contains choline and is recommended for epileptic pets, according to Messonnier.

Taurine and Tyrosine

The amino acids taurine and tyrosine have been used in the treatment of seizures, according to Messonnier. This combination my increase the seizure threshold in the dog and reduce the number of seizures. Each amino acid is given to the dog at 5 to 10 mg per pound of the dog’s body weight. This is given once or twice a day.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture aids in the treatment of epilepsy in dogs by stimulating the vagal nerve and improving the function of neurotransmitters, according to Narda Robinson, D.V.M. of Colorado State University. Studies conducted at the Medical College of Ohio showed that acupuncture improves cases involving seizures by changing the biochemistry of the central nervous system. Four to six acupuncture treatments may improve symptoms of epilepsy and allow for a decrease in anti-seizure medication in mild cases.

Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic remedies, like Thuja occidentalis, Silicea and Arnica montana, may provide relief in dogs suffering from epilepsy, according to Richard Pitcairn, DVM, in his book "Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats." However, Arnica montana is only used when epilepsy is caused by a traumatic head injury. Pitcairn recommends that a 30C dilution of one of the homeopathic remedies be used for one month with close monitoring. Since incorrect remedies or dosages may aggravate the symptoms, seeking advice from a practitioner of homeopathy is advised. Homeopathic remedies are available at most health food stores.

Always remember to consult with a veterinarian before administering holistic medicine in dogs with epilepsy.
